As humans, we have wandered away from life attitudes and ways allowing us to embrace other forms of life as sacred. Living in mechanistic, industrial growth society, we are led to think of other forms of life as mere extensions of economic values, minimizing their integrity and undermining their own inherent right to exist.
Our way of relating with trees is no different. Our relationship is sometimes objective, rather than connective; anthropocentric, rather than eco-centric; exploitative, rather than restorative.
In Writing Our Relationship with Trees, we will seek to cultivate harmonious connections with trees, which have their own way of being in the world and a great deal to offer us, when we make the time to hear their stories.
Connections are key to this process–with trees and other living things, including human beings. Using writing practices, rituals, group discussions, and poems, we will cultivate attitudes toward trees that are less exploitative, and more spiritual and restorative; we will increase our capacity to listen, maintaining a sense of openness, respect, and deep connection; and we will restore our sense of belongingness as we take our place as part of the human, as well as the broader ecological community.
